Head of the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group
Cihan Ay is currently professor of haematology at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, and was a visiting research professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC, USA (2016-2017).
He serves as co-director of the program for inherited bleeding disorders (e.g. haemophilia) and acquired thrombophilia at the Clinical Division of Haematology and Haemostaseology, Department of Medicine I, Medical University of Vienna – Vienna General Hospital, Austria.
He studied medicine at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria and the Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg, Germany. In 2006, he graduated from the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, received his medical training and completed specialisation in internal medicine, haematology and medical oncology at the Department of Medicine I, Medical University of Vienna.
His research and clinical work focuses on venous thromboembolism (VTE), anticoagulation and bleeding disorders. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications in the field of thrombosis and haemostasis.
He is an active peer reviewer for major medical journals in the field including the NEJM, JACC, BMJ, Circulation, Blood, ATVB, Haematologica, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH), Thrombosis Research and Thrombosis & Haemostasis (T&H), etc.
He also served as Co-Chair of the Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) Subcommittee (2015-2019) of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) on Haemostasis and Malignancy, on the Editorial Board of JTH, Thrombosis Research and Hämostaseologie, and as an associate editor of Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (RPTH), the new open access journal of ISTH. Since 2019, he is a member of the board of Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research (GTH).
Cihan Ay is a passionate clinician and researcher, and supervisor of diploma and PhD-students. Furthermore, he has been engaged in regular teaching activities for health care professionals to provide education in the field of thrombosis, haemostasis and anticoagulation.

After having received her medical degree from the Medical University of Vienna in 2008, Johanna Gebhart started her clinical and scientific career at the Department of Medicine I, Medical University of Vienna in the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Pabinger. She obtained her PhD degree in 2015 with her PhD-Thesis entitled “Revealing new mechanisms of mild-to-moderate bleeding tendencies: Assessment of plasma clot properties and hyperfibrinolysis in patients with mild bleeding disorders”. In 2018 she was given the venia legendi for internal medicine with her postdoctoral thesis on lupus anticoagulant positivity as risk factor for thrombosis and increased mortality.
Johanna Gebhart has her scientific focus on mild bleeding disorders and bleeding of unknown cause, primary immune thrombocytopenia and antiphospholipid antibodies. She has published in international peer-reviewed journals and has been awarded grants and awards of national and international societies. Since 2019 Johanna Gebhart has been serving as Co-Chair of the Scientific and Standardization Committee on Lupus Anticoagulant/Antiphospholipid Antibodies of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH).

Retired Professor of Haemostaseology at the Medical University of Vienna
Ingrid Pabinger-Fasching was Professor of Haemostaseology and Vice-Head of the Clinical Division of Haematology and Haemostaseology, Department of Medicine I, Medical University of Vienna, Austria until October 2021. From 1997 to 2021 she was director of the haemostaseology outpatient department for adults at the Vienna General Hospital.
After graduating as Medical Doctor at the University of Vienna, Ingrid Pabinger went on to train in Internal Medicine, accomplishing her professorial dissertation (Habilitation) in 1991 and specializing in haematology and oncology in 1999. Part of her training she performed in one of the leading international research laboratories, working with Prof. Dr. R.M. Bertina in Leiden, Holland. She started her career at the Department of Medicine I at the Vienna General Hospital, and has been in charge of the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group with focus on thrombosis research and bleeding disorders since 1990. Her specific fields of expertise include hereditary and acquired thrombosis risk factors, cancer-associated thrombosis, haemophilia and acquired haemorrhagic diathesis, immune thrombocytopenia and specific coagulation problems in critically ill patients.
Ingrid Pabinger has been Principal Investigator in many dozens of clinical trials and Coordinating Investigator in several international studies. She has published more than 480 papers (as of March 2022) in peer-reviewed journals, mainly in the fields of thrombosis, haemostasis, haematology and internal medicine. She has worked as Section- or Associate-Editor for several scientific journals, e.g. Haematologica, the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Annals of Haematology and Thrombosis Research.
Ingrid Pabinger acted as President of the Annual Meeting of the German, Austrian and Swiss Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (GTH) in Vienna in 2009 and as Vice-President of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) Congress in Berlin in 2017. She has been involved in several international and national scientific societies throughout her career, including the Board of the GTH (Chairperson 2007–2011), the Board of the European Hematology Association (EHA), where she also chaired the Nomination Committee for Board Members, and international and scientific committees of the American Society of Hematology (ASH). For the period 2016-2018 she was President of the ISTH.
In 2021 she became Honorary Member of the Austrian Haemophilia Society, in 2022 Honorary Member of the German, Austrian and Swiss Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research (GTH). In 2022 she received the "Esteemed Career Award" of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH).

Johannes Thaler received his medical degree from the Medical University of Vienna in 2008 and started his scientific career the same year in the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Ingrid Pabinger. He obtained his PhD degree in 2012 with his PhD Thesis entitled “Evaluation of Tissue Factor and Circulating Microparticles as Predictive Biomarkers for Venous Thromboembolism and Mortality in Cancer Patients“. In 2018 he was given his venia docendi for internal medicine.
Johannes Thaler is consultant at the Clinical Division of Haematology and Haemostaseology, Department of Medicine I of the Medical University of Vienna. He has his scientific focus on the investigation of procoagulant extracellular vesicles in clinical samples. He has published in international peer-reviewed journals and is involved in international research co-operations. In 2017 Johannes Thaler was elected co-chairman of the Scientific and Standardization Committee on Vascular Biology of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH). Since 2018 he is leading this subcommittee as chairman.

Dr. Oliver Königsbrügge, PhD

Oliver Königsbrügge joined the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group as medical student in 2010 and has since completed his medical studies and the PhD program Vascular Biology at the Medical University of Vienna.
As medical resident, Oliver is involved in the treatment of patients at the Clinical Division of Hematology and Hemostaseology of the Department of Medicine I at the Medical University of Vienna.
The scope of his research projects lies in anticoagulation for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation and treatment of venous thromboembolism, risk prediction of cancer-associated venous thromboembolism, and cardiovascular and bleeding complications in end-stage renal disease. Oliver is also co-investigator in trials on the treatment of haemophilia patients, referee for peer-reviewed journals and active member of international and national societies in thrombosis and haemostasis research.

Florian graduated from the Medical University of Graz in 2018. During his studies he worked as a scientific assistant at the department of oncology and completed several rotations abroad in Zurich, Switzerland and Philadelphia, USA. In October 2019, Florian moved to Vienna to join the study group of Prof. Pabinger and Prof. Ay. He is currently enrolled in the PhD programme “Malignant diseases” at the Medical University of Vienna, with his focus of research being cancer-associated thrombosis and the role of haemostasis in cancer progression.

After studying medicine at the Medical University of Vienna and obtaining her MD degree in July 2011, Julia Riedl started her PhD studies in the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group within the PhD program “Malignant diseases” in 2012. Under the supervision of Assoc.-Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Cihan Ay she worked on the identification of risk factors and mechanisms leading to venous thrombosis in cancer patients, whereby she had a special focus on platelet research.
She received her PhD degree in 2017 (title of the thesis: “Platelets in Cancer and Venous Thromboembolism”).
Since 2014, Julia Riedl has been an resident physician in internal medicine at the Clinical Division of Hematology and Hemostaseology, Department of Medicine I.

Dr. MSc Carla Tripisciano

Carla graduated in Biology at the University of Palermo, Italy, investigating extracellular vesicles in patients with ovarian carcinoma. She received her PhD in Chemical Engineering (Nanotechnology) at the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, Poland, within the EU Marie Curie Actions programme, working on the development of a carbon nanotube-based drug delivery system to target prostate cancer cells, and on the assessment of the blood compatibility of such carriers. During her PhD studies, she implemented her work visiting the Department of Urology at the Karl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Dresden, Germany, and the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom.
In 2010 she moved to Austria to start her PostDoc fellowship at the Danube University Krems, working in the field of extracorporeal blood purification techniques. In 2013, her research interest moved to blood-derived extracellular vesicles, investigating their pro-coagulant potential. At the Danube University Krems she was engaged in regular teaching activities in the field of haemostasis and bleeding disorders, and in projects acquisition and coordination.
After working as Clinical Study Coordinator in 2022 at the Department of Anesthesiology at the Medical University of Vienna, in 2023 she joined the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group (Head: Prof. Ay), supervised by Prof. Thaler, researching on the pro-coagulant activity of extracellular vesicles.
Dr. Tim Dreier

Tim Dreier studied medicine in Vienna and graduated as MD in 2023. During his studies, he completed clinical rotations in Germany and Austria (Cardiology, Hematology, Trauma Surgery, Critical Care Medicine) and a hemato-oncology centered internship at the Department of Molecular Pathology in Vienna. His diploma thesis focused on experimental parameters for assessing blood-vessel impairment on the cellular/molecular level in critical care patients with sepsis and COVID-19.
In September 2023, Tim enrolled in the “vascular biology” PhD-program at the Medical University of Vienna. Under the supervision of Ap.Prof. Priv.-Doz.in Dr.in Johanna Gebhart, PhD, his main focus is on the investigation of endothelial injury/impairment in patients with mild-to-moderate bleeding disorders, including bleeding disorder of unknown cause. To this end, he currently works on the Vienna Bleeding Biobank, a prospective cohort study on patients with mild-to-moderate bleeding disorders.

Cornelia graduated from the Paracelsus Medical Private University Salzburg in September 2020. To further specialize in research, Cornelia joined the group of Univ. Prof. Dr. Ingrid Pabinger-Fasching and Prof. Dr. Cihan Ay in April 2021.
She is currently enrolled in the PhD program “Malignant diseases” at the Medical University of Vienna. The focus of her translational research project is to understand the pathophysiological pathways and mechanisms involved in cancer-associated thrombosis in more detail.

Timothy Hoberstorfer studied Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna, where he graduated in 2023. During his studies, he worked as scientific assistant at the Division of Angiology and wrote his diploma thesis at the Division of Cardiology. Rotations abroad led him to Heidelberg (Germany), Newcastle (UK) and Zurich (Switzerland). In October 2023, he enrolled in the Vascular Biology PhD program and joined the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Univ.-Prof. PD Dr. Cihan Ay. His research currently focuses on the clinical and translational aspects of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Daniel Kraemmer studied medicine at the Medical University of Vienna and graduated in 2019. The topic of his diploma thesis, supervised by Assoc.-Prof. PD Dr. Cihan Ay, focused on biomarkers and clinical parameters for risk stratification in atrial fibrillation. In February 2020 he enrolled in the PhD program at the Medical University of Vienna, joining the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ingrid Pabinger-Fasching. His PhD project aims to investigate personalized therapy options and tailored treatment in haemophilia, particularly of the severe type, within the framework of the Austrian Haemophilia Registry.

Dr. Dino Mehic

Dino Mehic completed his studies at the Medical University of Graz in 2018. During this period he was also trained abroad completing rotations at the McGill University in Canada and an exchange semester in Spain. After his graduation he worked as a medical doctor in Vienna for his basic medical training.
In August 2019 Dino joined the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ingrid Pabinger. He currently works on the Vienna bleeding biobank (VIBB) study under the supervision of Prof. Pabinger and Priv.-Doz. Johanna Gebhart. He is enrolled in the PhD program “Vascular biology” and investigates underlying biological mechanisms of mild bleeding disorders.

Stephan Nopp studied Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. During his studies he completed rotations at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Hospital, Germany, and the Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals, Great Britain. In 2018, Stephan began practicing at the Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Medicine, Medical University of Vienna. After completing basic medical training, he pursued his passion for science and started his PhD studies in the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ingrid Pabinger-Fasching and Prof. Cihan Ay as part of the vascular biology program at the Medical University of Vienna. His research is mainly focused on pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, both forms of venous thromboembolism.

Jasmin Rast studied Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna and graduated in September 2021. After her graduation, she worked as a medical doctor in Vienna and completed her basic medical training.
In November 2022 Jasmin joined the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Univ.-Prof. Priv. Doz. Dr. Cihan Ay and is enrolled in the PhD program “Vascular biology” at the Medical University of Vienna. She is currently working at the Vienna ITP Biobank under the supervision of Ap.Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Johanna Gebhart, PhD to investigate clinical characteristics and identify laboratory biomarkers to have a better understanding of the disease and to optimize treatment of primary thrombocytopenia in adult patients.

Theresa graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in “Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology“ from the University of Applied Sciences IMC Krems. In September 2021, she successfully finished her Master studies in “Comparative Biomedicine” at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna.
In September 2020, Theresa joined the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Univ.-Prof. Priv. Doz. Dr. Cihan Ay and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ingrid Pabinger-Fasching as Master student. Together with her supervisor Ap.Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Johanna Gebhart, PhD she investigated the altered hemostatic potential and autoantibody-induced platelet desialylation in adults with primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). During that time, she gained great interest in investigating hematological disorders.
In October 2021 she enrolled in the PhD program “Vascular Biology“ at the Medical University of Vienna and has since continued her work in the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group. Her research mainly focuses on investigating the underlying biological mechanisms of immune thrombocytopenia in adult patients.

Daniel Steiner studied Medicine at the Medical University of Graz, Austria, and graduated in July 2021. During his studies, he worked as a scientific assistant at the Division of Oncology and completed several rotations abroad, including at the Kantonsspital Sankt Gallen, Switzerland, and at the Huế Central Hospital, Vietnam. In October 2021, Daniel enrolled in the PhD program Vascular Biology and joined the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Univ.-Prof. PD Dr. Cihan Ay and Univ.-Prof. i.R. Dr. Ingrid Pabinger-Fasching. His research focuses on venous thromboembolism, a disease entity encompassing deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Dr. Nikola Vladic

Nikola Vladic studied medicine at the Medical University of Rijeka, Croatia, and graduated in July 2023. During his studies, he put a lot of value on international exchange, completing rotations in Germany, Austria and the UK. The final two years of his studies he spent as guest student at the Medical University of Graz, where he also wrote his final thesis. Wanting to deepen his scientific knowledge and skills, he enrolled in the PhD program “Malignant Diseases” and joined the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Univ.-Prof. PD Dr Cihan Ay.
His research focus currently lies on the topic of cancer and thrombosis.

Rafaela Vostatek, MSc

Rafaela received her Bachelor of Science in ‘Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology’ from the University of Applied Sciences IMC Krems. After her Bachelor Studies, she continued with her Master Studies in ‘Molecular Biotechnology’ focusing on Drug Discovery. Rafaela completed her master thesis at the Boston Children’s Hospital from February 2020 until December 2020, where she worked at the Group of Leonard Zon, MD and focused on ‘An in vivo chemical genetic screen to identify new regulators of hematopoietic stem cells’. During that time, her interest in hematology research was strengthened.
In May 2021 she started her PhD studies in the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Assoc.-Prof. Priv. Doz. Cihan Ay and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ingrid Pabinger-Fasching. Rafaela is currently enrolled in the PhD program ‘Vascular Biology’ at the Medical University of Vienna.
She is interested in investigating the role of biological aging and the risk of venous thromboembolism in non-cancer and cancer patients. Rafaela also tries to elucidate the interplay of biological aging, inflammatory and procoagulant changes.

Ing.in Mag.a Tanja Altreiter

After accomplishing a short Study of Chemistry (Ing.) in 1992 and working as chemist and microbiologist for several years, Tanja Altreiter studied Translation and Interpretation of English and Italian at the University of Vienna (Mag.), graduation in 2007. Her diploma thesis on the terminology of breastfeeding and human milk was published as a book in 2009 (ISBN-13: 978-3639200393).
Since 2007 Tanja has been part of the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group: from 2007 until 2021 as personal assistant to Ao.Univ.-Prof.in i.R. Dr.in med.univ. Ingrid Pabinger-Fasching from 2021 onwards as personal assistant to Univ.-Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Cihan Ay.
Tanja is in charge of the administrative and organizational work of the research group, also including proof-reading of English publications and co-organization of medical congresses and workshops. She has been involved as administrative Study Coordinator in various clinical studies (phase I-IV).

Benedikt Bauer

After finishing his apprenticeship as chef, Benedikt Bauer worked in the “Regenwald der Österreicher” project of UNI Wien in Costa Rica. In 2011, he started his study of biology in Salzburg with main focus on genetics and forensic science.
In October 2018, he joined Univ.-Prof. Dr. Pabinger's Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group and took on responsibilities as data manager at the Department of Medicine I.
Benedikt's main responsibilities comprise administrative and patient related activities, such as informing patients about the Hämoassist digital diary, data collection and database management. This also involves network communication between physicians, study nurses and laboratory staff as well as recording data from study visits of different studies in mainly electronic databases and query management.

Birgit Forstner-Bergauer

Birgit graduated in September 1999 from the College for Biomedical Science (AKH Wien) as biomedical scientist (BMA).
After working for two years on an FWF research project, she joined the research group of Univ.-Prof. Dr. G. Steger, Department of Medicine I, Division of Oncology in the field of breast cancer in 2001. Her work focused mainly on cell cultures, e.g. human breast and colon cancer cell lines, molecular-biological and protein-analytical methods, but also on the supervision of diploma and PhD students, laboratory management and collaboration in clinical studies.
In April 2020 she joined the group of Ao.Univ.-Prof.in i.R. Dr.in med.univ. I. Pabinger-Fasching, focusing on clinical studies and laboratory management.

Michelle Fuchs

After studying Microbiology and Genetics at the University of Vienna, Michelle Fuchs conducted her Bachelor´s Thesis in the research group of Univ.-Profin.Drin. Alice Assinger at the Centre of Physiology and Pharmacology, focusing on the effect of acid-base imbalances in the vascular system on platelet-leukocyte interactions. In 2022, she started her studies of Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna.
Michelle joined the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group in March 2023 as a study coordinator, specializing in clinical studies. Her primary responsibilities revolve around patient-related and administrative tasks. These activities involve organizing and conducting study visits, as well as managing study data, including the recording and reviewing of collected data.

Silvia started to work at the (coagulation) laboratory of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Klaus Lechner in December 1982 after passing her A-levels at the Federal Institute for Advanced Training and Research in Chemical Industry, HTL Rosensteingasse, 1170 Vienna. She got the professional degree “Ingenieur“ after three years of working as a chemist.
After moving to the new building of the Medical University/General Hospital of Vienna in 1991 she started to work in the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of A.o.Univ.-Prof.in i.R. Dr.in med.univ. Ingrid Pabinger-Fasching. She has been involved in the evaluation, establishment and development of a variety of coagulation assays, for example Thrombin Generation.
Furthermore, she has been Study Coordinator in many academic and pharmaceutical studies, for example the LATS study (Lupus Anticoagulant with and without thrombosis) and the CATS study (Cancer and Thrombosis Study).
Silvia is responsible for laboratory management and co-support of some PhD-students in Ingrid Pabinger’s scientific research group. Her work also comprises the organisation of the lab according to international as well as in-house norms and standards, including safety regulations, as well as acquisition and maintenance of equipment and reagents.

DGKPin Barbara Střelka-Petz

After finishing the School for Healthcare and Nursing with the General Diploma in Healthcare and Nursing in St. Pölten in 2006, Barbara Střelka-Petz worked as Surgery Nurse at hospitals in St. Pölten, Linz and Steyr between 2006 and 2011.
In May 2011 she joined Ao.Univ.-Prof.in i.R. Dr.in med.univ. I. Pabinger's Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group as Study Nurse at the Department of Medicine I.
Barbara's main responsibilities comprise patient-related and administrative activities, such as preparing, performing and following up of visits by our study patients. This also involves communication between sponsors, CRAs and patients as well as recording and reviewing collected data of study visits in mainly electronic databases and management of queries.

Dr.in Ella Grilz, PhD
Ella Grilz received her Medical Doctor at the Medical University of Vienna. Her diploma thesis was carried out at the St. Anna Children’s hospital and focused on the safety of platelet concentrates.
In September 2015 she started her PhD studies in the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Pabinger and Assoc.-Prof. Prov.-Doz. Dr. Ay.
Her PhD project aimed to investigate epidemiology and risk factors of arterial thromboembolism in patients with cancer. Ella obtained her PhD degree in December 2019.

Mag.a Stefanie Hofer, PhD
Stefanie Hofer completed her studies in Biology (Genetics/Microbiology) at the University of Vienna in 2013. In October 2014 she started her PhD studies in the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ingrid Pabinger, taking part in the recruitment of patients for the Vienna Bleeding Biobank (VIBB). Her dissertation focused on the evaluation of thrombin generation, clot formation and clot lysis parameters of patients with mild-to-moderate bleeding tendency. Stefanie successfully finished her PhD in February 2020.

Dr. Florian Posch, PhD
Florian Posch has a background in clinical medicine (MD, Medical University of Vienna, Austria, 2014) and medical statistics (MSc, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom, 2012). He joined the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research Group in 2013 as a predoctoral student within the MD PhD programme of excellence of the Medical University of Vienna, focusing on the identification of novel biomarkers and risk assessment strategies for cancer-associated VTE (PhD, Medical University of Vienna, Austria, 2020).
A major focus of his past and ongoing work is to use innovative biostatistical analysis methods for improving the understanding of prothrombotic disease phenotypes such as cancer-associated VTE and the antiphospholipid syndrome. His background in medical statistics is frequently leveraged by the group for biostatistical consulting at all stages of the biomedical research process. Florian currently undergoes clinical training in internal medicine and medical oncology at the Division of Oncology, Medical University of Graz, Austria, but maintains very close research connections to the Pabinger-Ay lab.
