Inpatient Ward

Patient Information

We put people and their needs first. The following is intended to give you an overview of the concept, procedures and special features of our unit.

Please do not hesitate to contact the members of our multi-professional team if you have any questions.

  • The main role of palliative care is symptom management - identifying distressing symptoms and working with the patient as a team to find solutions.
  • Therapy goals are established at admission and reassessed weekly.

A Palliative Care Unit is autonomous in regard to the admission, treatment and discharge of patients.

A stay in our specialised Palliative Care Unit usually lasts two to three weeks. The stay should not exceed three weeks.

The inpatient stay is divided into:

  1. Admission phase (1st week): Getting to know each other, assessing symptoms, initiating symptom management, clarifying treatment goals
  2. Treatment phase (2nd week): Symptom management by an interdisciplinary team
  3. Discharge phase (3rd week): Final steps for outpatient care are taken
  • The multidisciplinary team at the Clinical Division of Palliative Medicine consists of physicians, nurses, dieticians, occupational therapists, volunteers, physiotherapists, psychologists/psychotherapists, social workers, service staff, students and researchers.
  • Ward rounds take place daily from Monday to Friday. A team of nurses, physicians and students will visit you between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm.
  • As an university hospital we are constantly striving to improve the treatment and care of our patients, therefore our department is also involved in ongoing scientific research. We would kindly invite you to participate in our studies!  You will receive information about our current projects during your inpatient stay. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our team.
